How it works
The math, step by step
1. Full price and cost. Add up the prices of the products in the bundle, and their costs. The difference is what the set earns at full price.
2a. By discount. The percentage comes off each product, and the discount on each one is rounded down to the cent, which is how Shopify applies a percentage discount in our tests on live carts. That is why the bundle price can be a few cents above taking the percentage off the total.
2b. By target margin. The lowest price that keeps your margin is total cost ÷ (1 - target margin), rounded up to the cent. The calculator also turns it into a whole-percent discount you can set, rounded down so you stay at or above the target.
3. The trade-off. A bundle earns less than the same products at full price. Divide the full-price profit by the bundle profit to see how many bundles you need to sell for every full-price set to earn the same.
What it leaves out. Shipping and fees per order, which a bundle pays once instead of per product, and shoppers who buy only because of the bundle.
Formulas
- Discount mode: bundle price = sum of (price - price × % off, with the discount rounded down to the cent per item)
- Target-margin mode: bundle price = total cost ÷ (1 - target margin), rounded up to the cent
- Profit = bundle price - total cost; margin = profit ÷ bundle price
- Bundles to match one full-price set = full-price profit ÷ bundle profit
Worked example
One store, start to finish
The bundle
A cleanser at $24.99 (cost $6), a serum at $37.99 (cost $9) and a cream at $31.99 (cost $8). 15% off.
Full price
$24.99 + $37.99 + $31.99 = $94.97. Cost$6 + $9 + $8 = $23. Profit at full price $71.97.Discount per product
$3.7485, $5.6985 and $4.7985, each rounded down: $3.74, $5.69 and $4.79. Prices $21.25 + $32.30 + $27.20 = $80.75. Taking 15% off the total would give $80.72.
Profit
$80.75 - $23 = $57.75, a 71.5% margin. The shopper saves $14.22.The trade-off
$71.97 ÷ $57.75 = 1.25. You need about 1.25 bundles for every full-price set, roughly 25% more sales, to earn the same profit.

FAQ
Bundle price questions
- How do I price a product bundle?
- Add up the full prices and the costs of the products in it. Then choose a discount the shopper will notice, and check the bundle still earns the margin you need. Or work backwards: total cost ÷ (1 - target margin) is the lowest price that keeps your target.
- Should I price a bundle by discount or by margin?
- Use both views. A discount is what the shopper sees (save 15%). A target margin is what protects you. Start from the margin you need, then pick a round discount at or below the most that margin allows.
- How much more do I need to sell to make up for the discount?
- Divide the profit of the set at full price by the profit of the bundle. If the set earns $71 at full price and $56.90 as a bundle, you need about 1.25 bundles for every full-price set, or roughly 25% more sales, to earn the same profit.
- How does Shopify round a percentage discount on a bundle?
- In our tests on live Shopify carts, the percentage is applied to each item and the discount is rounded down to the cent per item. That is why a bundle price can differ by a cent or two from taking the percentage off the total. The calculator rounds per item the same way.
- Can BundleUp sell bundles of different products?
- Yes. A BundleUp tier can include other products from your store, at full price or with their own discount, and the discount applies automatically at checkout. A bundle shows on one product's page.
